Spaying or Neutering Your Pet

Cat with a cone

According to a recent report released by the American Humane Society, animal shelters across the country euthanize 2.4 million healthy dogs and cats each year due to pet overpopulation. In Rains County, we suffer an excessive population of unwanted and stray animals. While this is both sad and frustrating, we can all be part of the solution through appropriate spay and neuter practices with your pets.

Benefits of Spaying

In addition to helping to control the population, there are several health impacts that spaying your female pets have. Spaying a cat or dog decreases her risk of developing uterine, ovarian, and mammary gland cancer. The risk decreases the most for dogs and cats who have the surgery before they would have gone into heat for the first time. At Emory Veterinary Clinic, we typically recommend spaying your pets around six months of age.

It is always important to have open discussions about any spaying concerns with our veterinarians so that together we can make the best decisions for your pet’s health! We can have this discussion at any wellness appointment or a surgical consultation appointment. Contact our office at 903-473-3101!

Benefits of Neutering

Like spaying, neutering male dogs do, of course, have important health benefits as well as population control. Benign prostatic enlargement and prostate cancer are important health concerns that are significantly lessened after neutering surgery takes place. Neutering can also decrease aggression and territorial behaviors, although behavioral modification is never a guarantee.
